Would you rather stay in Foster Care or become part of the Witness Protection Program? It’s a life changing decision for Nicki, the main character in the book, Greetings from the Witness Protection Program! by Jake Burt. If she leaves foster care, her whole past life would be erased, which in Nicki’s case may be a good thing. However, if she stays in Foster Care she wouldn’t have to say goodbye to her friends, but she would still be stuck without a true home. For Nicki abandoning her old life is the smartest move and she can start over her life, so it’s an easy decision. Choosing the path Nicki goes down could have been a mistake, because being in the Witness Protection Program is hard work that leaves her with many new changes and new responsibilities. Being moved across the country and being thrown into a new life is also challenging but doable. While she has to deal with a new lifestyle she also has to be protecting her family from being found by a criminal mastermind. Will Nicki stay under the radar or put her new family’s life on the line? To find out if Nicki has what it takes, read Greetings from the Witness Protection Program! by Jake Burt.
Even if Nicki’s decision would change her life, taking herself down a new path is her best option. One of her quotes, “I raise my hand, cutting him short. I learned from three foster families ago that a kid needs to have a flexible definition of normal. “Where do I sign?”” (Pg.32), This quote has as really resonated with me because it made me notice that we shouldn’t make decisions quickly but instead think hard on them and make sure we are making the right choices. Also, it makes me think before I act so I can make the right choice so I am aware of what I’m doing. Overall, this quote shows that I shouldn’t make a life changing choice on the spot but instead think about how it is going to affect me and my life.
